D.I.Y. Sharpie Mugs ✎

Like most Irish households, or households all over the world you can never have too many mugs. I for one have quite an extensive collection of mugs as coffee plays a big role in my life. I cannot start my day without my daily dose of coffee and I love choosing which mug to use.

Which is why I will be showing how to create your very own customised mug to get you started for the day! These mugs will be created by you, for you and will last you. The best part is that you only need 4 tools to create them!

 You will need:

1. A plain mug (of course)

2. A Sharpie marker (or permanent marker of your choice)

3. Some Cotton pads

4. White vinegar

Step 1:

Take a cotton pad, pour some vinegar onto it and wipe it over the surface of the mug where you would like to illustrate as it will remove any oils on the surface making it easier to draw and making your design last longer on the mug.

Step 2:

Take your marker and start drawing! You can put whatever you’d like on it, whether it be a quote, a picture or even a cartoon, the best thing about it is that it will be completely unique to you. If you’re like me and you can’t live without your morning cup of coffee than remember this mug will be one of the first things you see before you start you day so make it inspiring.

(Tip: If you change your mind about your design or you make a mistake you can use a cotton pad and vinegar to wipe it away and start again, however it does dry quick so act fast!).

Step 3:

Once you’ve decided you’re happy with your design you will then put your mug in the oven, without preheating it at all, at 220℃ and leave it there for 30 minutes. Once the 30 minutes have passed, open you oven door and leave a gap but DO NOT take your mug out of the oven just yet as it might crack from the heat so leave the door open a bit until it is cool to the touch and then you may take it out.

 Step 4:

And voila! Your mug is done. The heat from the oven has embedded your design into the mug so you can wash it in your washing machine and it will last you years (or until you break it).

This is how mine turned out!

You can go as minimal as you want or you can fill every angle as I have done. I choose to use one of my favourite inspiring quotes as the main feature of my mug, and filled the rest of it with little designs and more inspirational things! It may seem strange having such a plain black and white mug, however if you use other coloured markers they will turn brown from the oven. I personally love these mugs and think they are an adorable addition to any kitchen, and they can even be used as a gift to someone and will give a nice personal touch. Hopefully this has inspired you to try and be a D.I.Y. goddess, and if you do make one be sure to let me know! Enjoy! ♡
